Well it's official. If Stephen Colbert says it, it must be true. He's put the Kansas Dems on notice. The Democrats have their largest presence in KS in years, and they will be held accountable in the next election. In 2008, we'll see whether Moore, Morrison, and especially Boyda will retain their jobs. The Kansas Republican Party did a horrible job in fundraising and supporting candidates this year. Ron Freeman--KS GOP director--is on notice and will probably be replaced.
Also, Johnson County GOP precinct committee members are on notice. Within the next month, they will choose a new JoCo district attorney and possible rising star to challenge the Kansas Democratic establishment. Point of advice: Pick a real Republican and not another opportunist like Paul Morrison.
The Konnection hears rumors that assistant DA Rick Guinn is vying for the job and touting his Republican credentials, despite his donation to Morrison's AG campaign. Other rumored contenders include Reps. Lance Kinzer and Kevin Yoder.
Yoder is young and a little inexperienced (it's only been about 3 years since he graduated from law school), but he someone who can unite the moderates and the conservatives, and he would make a great DA, and definitely grow into the office. Of course, the Konnection has been touting Yoder for a while now, and how he would make a great candidate for higher office (3rd district nominee against Moore in 2 years?). He's definitely our pick.

As it is with the republicans, the term democrat is not universal.
I don't know that much about our govenor, but my son (who is a conservative) had indicated that she is "not all that bad".
The whole Paul Morrison/Phil Kline thing was way out of wack. I don't know why Morrison jumped and I don't know why people were so down on Kline. Issues seem lost in all the garbage that was flying around.
But Dennis Moore has got to go !!!
Because I am not that aware of our party machine, I don't know where it failed. I suspect part of it was that the dems were able to create a national mood and it showed in our losses. It is so wierd that people can be swayed emotionally instead of intellectualy.
GWB did not help our cause. He had conservatives voting against him and it showed.
I have not been all that impressed with our Johnson County leadership either. They were non-existent here in Lenexa. Chuck Ahner did not seem to get any kind of traction here in Lenexa (which he really needed in order to have chance). Dennis Moore yard signs were all over the place.
The initial post to this thread talked about accountability. That needs to be developed in terms of clear measures that we can start tracking now.

first, I hope you had a chance to read my response to your post on the education debate (it's under the monday, oct. 2 entry). The governor has led pretty well, but she is EXTREMELY liberal--she's just been careful not to convey that or push any of her beliefs since she's been elected governor (read some of her speeches and writings from the early 90s and you're know what I mean). What I'm most upset is her support of the massive 3-year education funding boondoggle that is unsupportable.
You're right--Moore has built up this image of a moderate, consensus builder, but in fact he votes quite liberal--socially and economically--and he's been rated by national publications as one of the most ineffective members of congress.
I sit on the GOP precinct committee, and I look forward to nominating a new county chairman, and I hope a new state party chairman will be appointed to reverse these losses, work on fundraising, and agressively target sitting Dems (we were so weak this year, the county GOP couldn't even recruit a challenger to the one dem state rep. in JoCo--Sue Storm. That's pretty pathetic.
We do need accountability. And that begins by replacing the current party machinery.

What you describe below seems like an almost apathetic state. Unfortunately, as we have become more connected by the media, the big money has landed on the federal side of things.
I think we need, as conservatives, to get clear that trying to do things at the federal level is going to the dark side of the force, it may get you some things quicker, but it eventually takes you over.
That is where we are.
And so, our challenge is to remind people that local politics should rule supreme and that it should be respected by those at the federal level. They exist only to protect our freedom to govern locally.
The 17th amendment needs to go.
And the 14th needs to be rewritten so that it can't be used to club states over the head (and basically supercede the 10th....which it does not, but still gets used that way).
Education in local government and better organization to do that is key. As I have said, our party machinery is almost non-existent.
